I colored my hair red and it turned out horrible. . .?

I used the Herbal Essences haircolor instead of my usual brand and it looked like my head had stripes on it (yes, I DID follow the directions). I called their help line and they suggested another color to put over it, which would return my hair to it's natural color. Now, my roots are red and the rest of my hair is kind of a purple-y brown/red (which is much more liveable than red stripes). I was then told to wash my hair with Dawn, which isn't working. Any other tricks before I go to the salon? Thanks for your help.

If you go to a salon to fix it, and they f*ck it up, you at least have someone to blame and someone who *has* to fix it...

Try a dark mahogany brown if you want to cover it up, it could just layer over the colour you have, so you end up with something blotchier. I had a bad hair incident a few years back (orange and purple stripes? - no thank you) and used a colour stripper to wash it all out. My hair ended up a shade lighter than normal, but that meant I was able to tone it down with a subtle rinse. I'm naturally blonde, so the colour did end up a bit orangey, but yours will probably end up more blondey.

Tweezerman make a really good colour remover that's gentle and effective. "Level Out" is effective, and I'm told it will even get stains out of clothing.

Satin make "color reverse" which is really good too. Make sure your hair is clean and free from product buildup and grease, that way it will give you a good all-over result. There's a lot more out there, try and get something without ammonia, as it can wreak havoc on your scalp and is never recommended for redheads or blondes.

I don't think there is anything else you can do yourself without causing further damage to your hair. The salon will take care of you.

Wash it in Tide
